The History of Chapin Furniture

Gladys loves her home on Lake Murray in Chapin, SC. She and husband Joe moved to the location on Lake Murray in 1980. They raised their third son in the home, while their other two sons were away at college. Though already successful business people with retail automotive service facilities across the United States, it wasn’t until Joe and Gladys tore down their home and built a new house in its place that they considered opening a furniture store.
“Building our new home made us realize just how important it is to have people who care about your home furnishings needs,” says Gladys about their decision to open Chapin Furniture.
“There was an old Red & White grocery store, in a good location in Chapin, that had closed down recently,” Joe reflects. “We bought the property, renovated, and opened a Furniture Store on one end and with another partner, opened Rentzall Rental Equipment store on the other end.”
Chapin Furniture opened for business on March 14th, 2002. From that day, Chapin Furniture has continued its metamorphosis from an outlet store selling mostly discontinued and closeout items to a full-feature furniture store offering custom ordering of furniture and delivery and setup of furniture and accessories to anywhere in the continental United States.
Chapin Furniture is located at 1150 Chapin Road in Chapin, SC, just twenty minutes from the State Capital of Columbia. It has an on-site 25,000 square foot, four-story warehouse, allowing the company to keep in stock a huge inventory and to provide fast, reliable delivery of furniture and decorative accessories. The store’s slogan, often heard chanted on the radio airwaves of the greater Columbia area is, “Joe has just what you’re looking for, and you can get it today!”
You’ll find the store beautifully decorated by Melissa Runyan, the store’s on staff interior designer. “People come in and look around the store and can’t believe they can get such beautiful things for such good prices,” says Melissa of the store. Customers often comment on the uniqueness of the store compared to the familiar look and feel of the big-box stores around town.
The staff at Chapin Furniture is quite helpful as well. Friendly and knowledgeable, they help take a lot of the confusion out of creating a home that is inviting and welcoming by providing as much or as little guidance as you need in decorating your home.
In April of 2008, the store expanded into another 5000 square feet, and now covers 20,000 square feet of home furnishings and home décor. This includes a dedicated Serta and Tempur-pedic mattress gallery, a home theater area with family movies constantly playing on a big screen to entertain kids and family alike. Chapin Furniture also has a dedicated reclining and motion furniture area, and a dedicated children’s furniture showroom.
“You’ll find just about anything you need here, from the nightstand for your bedroom to the lamp and accessories to put on top of it,” says Keith Grimaud, Joe and Gladys’s son who helps run the family business. “And if you can’t get by our store to check it out, just look it up online and we will ship it to you, anywhere in the continental United States. If you have any questions, just give us a call. We’re here to help!”
